Bio

I have a vivid memory of my first successful painting.  I was a seven years of age and had to draw creatures of the sea with a biro and some water paints.    I remember how I became lost in my imagination whilst creating these fantasy creatures.  I was hooked.

I looked forward to painting on holidays as fully occupied in caring proffesions and raising two lovely children with my husband, becoming an artist was a distant dream. I began following the dream in retirement and was awarded a First Class Honours Degree in Fine Art at Glyndwr University, Wrexham in 2009. Being a mature student was amazing, allowing me to use my imagination and ideas eventually to create installations of collaged photographs, digital images, 3D photography and video, based on my life experiences. .  The hospital which provided such a rich working life had sadly closed many years previously and become derelict.

The hospital staff and patients were interdependent and had a symbiotic relationship which was reflected in my final  degree work. Often images seen in the media had negative connotations and I was keen to introduce and display by my installation of art just how many positive events were often enjoyed by the community as a whole.

I believe my art reflects inner unconscious desires and also  conscious feelings and memory. I draw inspiration from photographs, found images, marks on site of previous generations, artefacts and archives. I aim to play with perception and hope memories and feelings of the viewer are kindled from their own personal histories.

There are many artists that have inspired my artwork.  They include Vincent Van Gogh, Wassily Kandinsky, Henri Mattise, Peter Doig, Howard Hodgkin, John Stezacker, Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp. The latter ones have used photography and memory in their artistic process along with painting, cutting or assembling.

Since graduating I have continued to paint and draw in many media, now preferring acrylic, oil and printing.  My style is often abstract with some realism, recently leading to pure abstraction which allows my fascination with colour and mark making to flow. I remain eclectic in my choice of subjects and media, and maintain my enjoyment of having and sharing such choice.  This you will see as you explore my works in the next pages.
